How Is Custom Jewelry Made? Amethyst Pendant part 2

posted in: Birthstones, Silver | 0

Welcome back!

In Part 1 of our two-part series on the making of a custom amethyst pendant, we showed you the beginning steps of the process from lining up the stone on a piece of silver to mark the area to cut, to the creation and firing of the bezel that will eventually hold the stone.

When we last left Tony, he was checking the proportions of the pendant size to the chain size and making pencil markings on silver where the cutouts for decorative elements will be made.

The next step is the cutouts themselves.

Here, you can see the back side of the pendant after the cutouts have been made.   As this is a true custom jewelry piece, Tony made the cutouts by hand and then attached the bezel.  By hand.  Next you see the front of the pendant.  Notice the unique additional design elements cut into the silver.

As the pendant comes together, Tony is adding some delightful gold design elements.  In this case, he’s adding some small decorative gold balls and it’s beginning to look more and more like the finished product.

You can see in the image the pendant after the gold designs are attached…just waiting for that beautiful amethyst!

By the way, if you’re into feng shui, amethyst (especially in conjunction with silver and gold) is considered to radiate positive energy and keep negative forces away.  We don’t know if Tony thought about that when he added the gold balls, but it was a beautiful touch!

Now we’re really on the home stretch!

It can never be too smooth, but it can never be the least bit rough, either.  Tony smooths out more rough edges to prepare to set the amethyst.

At last!!  After all the meticulous measuring, drawing, cutting, bezeling, decorating and smoothing, the amethyst is finally placed in the setting and the edges of the bezel are then carefully pushed into place to secure the stone.

Once this is done, any remaining rough edges are then smoothed out and the pendant and stone are placed into a cleaner.
